All of Me #2

My first cartoon focused on negative traits and issues, which may have left the impression that I’d ‘given in’ to them. Nothing could be further from the truth – I’ve simply accepted their presence and I’m aware of how and when they affect me.

  1. Thank you for sharing this with us. Every person that learns even a little bit about depression is a step in the right direction to more people being aware of these mental issues. And I don’t consider it an illness, in this day and age it is hardly unexpected with daily mass shootings, terrorism etc. It’s just a symptom of our society.
Keep up the fight, we WILL win in the end, and be stronger and wiser for it.
    Blessings to you and yours.

    • In many cases, depression is caused by chemical imbalances in the brain – so it IS an illness and it requires treatment through medication in most instances. Seeing it as an “issue” that is a symptom of a violent society is misinformed and, frankly, a little offensive.

I’ve been treated for depression, anxiety and stress off and on for around 20 years – it’s not a mental “issue” it’s a mental illness. One that requires constant vigilance on my part so I don’t succumb to it fully and never leave my house ever again. You don’t think that’s an illness? You think that is a symptom of the last ten or fifteen years of shootings and terrorism that haven’t affected me on a personal level at all?

Please, if you need to ask questions, I really don’t mind answering. But for goodness sake, don’t try to assign blame or play down a very real (in some cases incredibly debilitating) illness by saying it’s just an “issue”.
